Alice wins the 2020 PRACE Ada Lovelace Award for HPC.17,6 million billing units on the fastest supercomputer in the Nordic countries will be used to study seismo-acoustic effects of geothermal stimulation (EGS) induced earthquakes in Helsinki. Mahti Grand Challenge supercomputing project "QuakeSounds" has been accepted in collaboration with Gregor Hillers (University of Helsinki) and Michael Bader, Lukas Krenz and Sebastian Wolf (TUM).Richter Early Career Award for innovative research in earthquake rupture dynamics and tsunami genesis, among other topics, using physics-based models and high-performance computing. Alice has been honoured with the SSA Charles F.First GPU simulations with SeisSol on Marconi100 and Piz Daint.Recordings of the Earthquake Physics group’s AGU 2020 oral presentations.SSA Student Presentation Award for Nico Schliwa. The Steering Committee of MCS-RCN Modeling Collaboratory for Subduction,Īt the SZ4D Faulting and Earthquake Cycle Working group,Īnd as Domain Co-Chair Minisymposia and Posters Program Committee for Solid Earth Dynamics at the Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC) Conferences. The Executive Committee of CIG - Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics, The Scientific Steering Committee of PRACE - European Supercomputer Resources , The SCEC Research Computing and CyberInfrastructure Task Force,Īs Guest Editor of the Frontiers special issue High-Performance Computing in Solid Earth Geohazards: Progresses, Achievements and Challenges for a Safer World, The AGU Fall meeting seismology program committee, The Seismica initiative - the community-led Diamond Open Access journal for seismology, We work on modern software packages for earthquake simulations ( "SeisSol" and "ExaHyPE") and engage in large-scale infrastructure projects. Our research is distinguished by large-scale earthquake scenarios of unforeseen degree of realism realised on some of the largest supercomputers worldwide. We study geophysical problems on a range of scales, from earthquake-tsunami interaction in subduction zones to fracture activation in geo-reservoirs. We focus on understanding the physics of earthquakes using numerical models, theoretical analysis and observations from natural earthquakes and laboratory experiments. The Earthquake Physics group is led by Professor Alice-Agnes Gabriel.
